It was a happy Father’s Day and a happy early birthday kind of weekend. Let me backtrack. So you know how my family is really large and close and we always do things in a very big way? Well, we have this tradition of throwing a surprise party for milestone birthdays. It started with my family members turning 40, then the parties went into the 50s. I actually had one when I turned 30. Not everyone in my family has had a surprise party, but majority of everyone has, and they are always fun to plan. Lately though, our family has gone through a lot, and there are definitely more of us to wrangle. This is how the weekend that almost wasn’t went down.
My sister has a big birthday coming up; she’ll be turning 25 in a couple of weeks. My mom and I decided that it was time for her to have a surprise party. We came up with a perfect weekend to celebrate, Father’s Day weekend, because she wouldn’t be expecting a party then. Right. We had the details planned, the family ready to gather, and then I asked my mom, “Paige is going home, right?” No one had asked her if she would even be home that weekend. D’oh! My mom and I are clearly planner extraordinaires. That’s actually my sister’s job. The irony. Anywho, when I asked her if she was going home, she had other plans. My sister travels all the time for her job, so for her to not be able to go home is not surprising. But we kind of needed her to be home in order for her to be surprised. We threw our hands up, and the party was canceled. M, Charlotte and I made our way down anyway.
I just knew though that more than likely my sister would also make her way down to our little hometown by the bay. I just had this feeling. And I was right. That made us go into high gear though because we didn’t know she would be there until 24 hours before the event. Off we went into planning mode on how we were going to pull off this surprise. Back to plan A! So much stress. I was sick to my stomach until we got her to her lunch party. My family really pulled it off, but I’m pretty sure my sister is too smart for her own good and maybe, just maybe, had a slight clue that something was going to happen. She still enjoyed it, and I’m so happy we got to celebrate her life, and that we got to eat our favorite seafood boil. The best.
After lunch, Charlotte needed a nap like whoa, and the rest of the family went on to keep the celebration going. We joined them after Little Miss woke up.
Saturday night was spent laughing, dancing, playing games, singing, and being as festive as festive could be. (I even shared my first Snapchat. Is that what they’re called? A snap? I don’t know.) Charlotte had a ball dancing, and so did the hubs! He has not danced since our wedding. It was seriously too much fun.
Sunday was so special, too. Of course it was Father’s Day, and we started it off with mass. This was the first time my grandpa has been able to attend mass since he has been sick. It was a beautiful and emotional time together as a family. The homily was phenomenal, and Charlotte even behaved well considering it was an extra long mass. After church, we all went to lunch together as a family, and it’s something we haven’t been able to do in a very long time. I’m so thankful that my Popo was well enough to spend the day with all of us.
After lunch, I snapped this picture of my love and little love, and I just love them to pieces.
While Charlotte was napping, M stayed with her while I went to say goodbye to the rest of the clan. This isn’t my entire family, but it was majority of us. We certainly did miss the ones who couldn’t be there.
We are beyond blessed to have my grandpa here with us, and we certainly made the day as special as we could.
The weekend that almost wasn’t ended up being perfectly imperfect, with all the love a family can give. The next time we throw a surprise party though, we’ll be sure to invite the honoree first.
Let’s keep in touch, shall we?

Thanks, T! :) It was hard pulling it off, but we did it! We laughed so much about it, so we for sure enjoyed ourselves.
I have no clue how to Snapchat. I saw that you added me, but I don’t ever post on there either. It’s…interesting. Lol.
