In honor of my return from my Mexican vacation in Cancun, I thought I would share my favorite homemade taco seasoning because 1) I need to detox like whoa and 2) I am still craving Mexican food. (Although, I feel like I’m always going through those two things without ever throwing a Mexican vacation in there.) Once you make this recipe, you probably won’t ever want to go back to the pre-packaged taco seasoning packet. I started using this fresh mix when I was doing Paleo for the first time, and I haven’t looked back. Fresh taco seasoning not only tastes better, it’s better for you too. Who really needs all the extra chemicals from that prepackaged stuff anyway? Grab all your spices and a little air tight jar (I use an old baby food jar) and mix this puppy up for your pantry.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 TBSP chili powder
- 1 TBSP ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (add a dash more if you like it spicier)
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 2 tsp black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Whisk together all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Store in an airtight container. Use 2 TBSP of the mix when cooking with 1-2 pounds of meat to get the perfect taco meat.
Happy Taco Tuesday!
Let’s keep in touch, shall we?

I love homemade taco & fajita seasonings! I pretty much always make my own too, but every once in a while when I run out of my mixture, or TIME I just grab a packet, but it is never ever as good!

Oooh, I’ll have to get your fajita seasoning mix. Is it pretty much the same? If I’m short on time and we’re not doing Paleo (which is all the time right now), I don’t mind using the packet. However, my hubs refuses to eat that anymore. Lol. I guess it’s a good push to make the good stuff. Hope you’re feeling great!

Awesome! I’ve never made homemade taco seasoning, but am definitely going to have to try it soon. We go through a ton of it, so I’m sure it’s worth it! Thanks for the recipe!

You are welcome, Sara! Let me know how you like it if you decide to try it. :) When I make taco meat, I usually add just a little bit of water to the mix after draining the fat. You don’t have to, but I like mine to have a little bit of a sauce mixture.

This is the exact recipe we use and it’s the best! I make a big mason jar full and use it for a whole month! So good!

Woohoo, Jen! I need to double this recipe up next time I make it. :) It always seems to run out far too quickly. Hope you’re having a great week!

Yum! I make my own BBQ rub, but taco seasoning never seems to cross my mind. This looks like an excellent recipe for a Mason jar hostess gift too!
Kristy says
Thanks, Stephanie! That sounds like a great hostess gift. What a great suggestion! :)

I wanted to come back and let you know that I used this mix to make my slow cooker lentil quinoa lettuce wraps. Totally delicious! I’m stocking up and making a few more batches for the pantry!

Yay! I’m so glad you liked it! It’s the only seasoning my husband will eat now, so I always stock up. :)

Thank you my friend!! I have everything buy paprika in my pantry so I am 99% of the way there…I do have sea salt but how is it with kosher salt? just fine?
Kristy says
You are welcome! I think Kosher salt will work just fine. I use regular salt most of the time anyway. Hope you like it!
