I was an only child for eight and a half years. Somewhere in that time, rumor has it that I begged for a sibling. Call it what you may, but I’m pretty sure my guardian angels were intervening and helped me out by making sure that a certain someone would bless my life forever. One hot summer day during the 4th of July holiday, fittingly coming in as the firecracker that she is, my sister was born. She’s beautiful, funny, sarcastic, bold, sensitive, and loyal. In honor of her birthday this weekend, this is just a little glimpse into what it means to have had her as my sidekick.
What is a little sister?
A little sister is…
…someone who, if you’ve played your cards right, is destined to be your best friend.
…someone who will endure the cheesy studio pictures with you (and the matchy-matchy outfits, too).
…someone whose closet will look very similar to yours.
…someone who will teach you what it’s like to have a daughter before you ever have one of your own.
…someone who you will want to throw in the water sometimes (but if anyone else ever feels that way, they’d have to go through big sister first).
…someone who will love you through all of the bad fashion trends.
…someone who will appreciate the limo with you, because you’ll have to give her an upgrade from the bicycle eventually.
…someone who loves the same sports teams as you do, and thank goodness for that.
…someone who is your own personal comedian on family vacations (and she’ll even laugh at your lame jokes, too).
…someone who will be your maid of honor on your wedding day,
and someone who will give the best speech around.
…someone whom you will watch grow into a beautiful woman, and someone whom you will get to travel the world with, creating some of life’s best moments.
…someone who will want to act like the big sister from time to time (and you’ll let her, because little sisters always think they are the boss, and that’s ok).
…someone whom you’ll share thousands of inside jokes with, of which you both could laugh for days.
…someone who will have rooted you on through all of your graduations, and you’ll feel even prouder when you watch her at all of hers.
…someone who will be best friends with your best friends, because she’s always been their little sister, too.
…someone who will always say yes to the best concerts (you taught her what music to love after all).
…someone who knows how to make you feel like a million bucks.
…someone whom you will build traditions with no matter how redundant.
…someone who has been there for your life’s best moments,
and someone who has been through your life’s worst moments, too.
…someone who will love your baby and be the best aunt around.
My little sister has told me that she doesn’t know how she would do this life without me. Quite frankly, I don’t know how I would do this life without her. She has seen me through every triumph and every heartache, always being one of my reasons to keep pushing through. Being an older sister comes with its fair share of responsibilities. And when I make mistakes, I make sure she learns from them. Someone should reap the benefits of that. She knows my deepest secrets, and we have a bond that is like no other. I can tell what she’s thinking before she even says it, and I have been and always will be her protector. She’s taught me a thing or two herself.
So what is a little sister?
A little sister is…
…someone whom you can look back with and smile, because geez, you made it through all of that.
…someone whom you can look forward to the future with, knowing that the best is yet to come.
Yes, sister, the best is yet to come.
Happy birthday, Pahina!
I love you more than a Bo De B sandwich with a side of champs.
