As I’m heading toward the finish line of my pregnancy, I’ve realized that I’ve worn the same clothes over and over since January. When I was looking through my closet the other day, it dawned on me: I’ve pretty much been living with a maternity capsule wardrobe. With it, I weathered the cool temps of winter (Texas winters are the best), and I even weathered the heat of summer.
This time around, I definitely kept my maternity options to a minimum, but I still managed to come up with cute, cool, and stylish outfits. I used a lot of what I already had in my closet, and I borrowed a lot, too. I also kept my postpartum body in mind when purchasing new items, because you know I’m all about making clothing pieces last.
With only 22 articles of clothing and four pairs of shoes, I managed to create multiple outfits throughout the last nine months just by switching up the outer wear or changing up my shoes. Here are the pieces that have taken me from my little baby bump to my huge third trimester belly, and will carry me through my postpartum days, too.
Swing dresses
black dress // gray dress // olive dress // navy midi dress
chambray dress (similar) // striped dress // white dress
Swing dresses were my saving grace this pregnancy. I loaded up on them, and while they may not be nursing friendly per se, they were absolutely the most comfortable “maternity” dresses ever. Majority of these are not even deemed maternity, making them a great purchase. I did have half of them already in my closet, helping out my pocket book.
The black dress is more fitted, and I took every bump photo in this one. Another favorite is the striped dress paired with either my utility jacket or blue jean jacket. The white dress is a must for special occasions, and this version also comes in an off-white color perfect for fall.
Outerwear
blue jean jacket // utility vest (or jacket) // blue jean vest // cardigan
By adding one of these items, you can change up your outfit in an instance. It’s what I did with almost every outfit whenever I wanted to dress something up a little or dress it down.
Blouses
chambray shirt // white swing tee // striped tee // white poplin
These four blouses are timeless, and you’ll be able to wear all of them post baby, too. You can wear them to work with dress pants or with shorts for casual days. I also used the white poplin as a bathing suit cover-up this summer.
Shorts
bermuda shorts // frayed shorts // white shorts
If any part of your pregnancy is in the summer, shorts are crucial. A longer pair, a frayed pair, and white or black pair will be worn over and over. I love the full panel the most, especially in the second and third trimester.
Must-have
This white, sleeveless tank is a must! You can wear this underneath blouses for an extra layer, under outerwear for the warmer days, or by itself with either shorts or pants. It’s so versatile, and will be worn countless times.
Pants
black cropped skinnies // blue jeans // black leggings
If you’re a working mama, these black cropped skinnies are the best pants to have in your working wear maternity wardrobe. They’s super comfortable and will dress anything up. My favorite pair of blue jeans to have in the arsenal is the boyfriend jean. These are an updated version and aren’t so baggy, making you look pulled together. And of course, the leggings could not be left off this list. Black leggings can be worn with pretty much any of the blouses and outwear, and they can even go under swing dresses in the fall/spring. They are timeless! And you won’t regret having them in your closet post baby.
Shoes
Converse tennis shoes // booties // gladiator sandals // Tory Buch sandals
These four pairs of shoes are perfect to wear with any of the above outfits you put together. I love wearing my tennis shoes with shorts and even my swing dresses. For church, I would dress things up with the booties or gladiator sandals, and when swelling started to creep in, I loved slipping on my Tory Burch sandals.
I’m going to miss dressing this bump, but I know my wardrobe won’t look much different than it does right now thanks to a little forethought. These pieces are reasonably priced, and they really will give you the most bang for your buck. My favorite. When you have a capsule wardrobe in place, it makes getting dressed so easy and quick, any mom’s dream.
It would be so easy to update this for winter as well. All you would need are a few more cardigans, a coat, and maybe some knee-high boots.
Good luck to all the new and expectant moms out there!

I love the idea of a maternity capsule wardrobe! You almost have to have one because what you can wear is so limited! Great pieces!
