This past weekend we went to Port Lavaca again for my cousin’s graduation party, for Father’s Day, and unexpectedly, for a trip to the E.R. Despite the unfortunate event, we had a really great time when we were there.
Our Weekend
Friday, as soon as we got there, we went straight to lunch and had the most amazing chicken fried steak. Then for dinner, we went to Barkett’s, our favorite local seafood restaurant, and I had the best crab stuffed shrimp on the coast. My aunt offered to watch Charlotte while M and I joined my mom and grandma for a quiet and wonderful dinner. All we ever do is eat when we’re down in Port Lavaca, and our waistline definitely shows it. But Charlotte had a blast with my Aunt Cindy all afternoon while we were gone. Just look at her smile.
Saturday, we went to another one of my aunt’s house and enjoyed the day while we waited for my cousin’s graduation party to start down the street at the country club. M and my uncle golfed, and when they were done, Charlotte hopped on the cart with them like the big girl she is.
Then it was party time!
Charlotte and I both got some new clothes this week, and this little girl is all about the dresses. She loves anything she can twirl in.
The graduation party honoring my cousin Josh was so much fun, and we really enjoyed ourselves. We had a great dinner, and then Josh and his band and my aunt entertained us on the patio. If you’ve been reading Seven Graces long enough, you might have picked up somewhere that my family is a singing family. My Aunt Hope has always been our star singer, and Josh, her son, is on the rise. He is so talented! I know I’m bias, but you can get a glimpse of the party in my Snapchat story from the day. (I tried to edit the first couple of snaps out, but I’m not that great with video.)
Aren’t they amazing? And yes, most every single party my family has involves singing and dancing like that. It’s pretty much a requirement.
That night, we all went to bed pretty late, but Sunday we had brunch plans with my dad pretty early. We had stayed the night at my Aunt Rita’s house, so when we woke up, we all needed to get dressed pretty quickly.
Our Trip to the E.R.
Charlotte loves going up and down the stairs, so it’s a constant battle watching her. My mom had stayed with us and was following her up, but at the landing, there was a huge 5 foot by 3 foot picture frame leaning against the wall waiting to be hung. Somehow, Charlotte bumped into it with her back, and it came crashing down on her. All I heard was glass crashing, Charlotte screaming, and then my mom screaming.
We all ran upstairs super fast, and my mom was already holding onto Charlotte after pulling her out from all the broken glass. It was so scary because my mom was freaking out about Charlotte’s leg and how big the gash was. And my mom never freaks out. She actually saw a big chunk of glass in Charlotte’s leg and saw Charlotte pull it out.
We knew immediately that we needed to take Char to the emergency room. My mom wrapped Charlotte’s leg quickly and applied pressure to the wound with a towel to try and stop the bleeding. M & I hadn’t even changed out of our pajamas yet, so we got ready as quickly as we could and then ran out of the house like crazy people. My mom held onto Charlotte’s leg as we rushed to the hospital, and as soon as we pulled up and got out of the car, they let us into the back rooms immediately.
On our way to the hospital, my mom realized that she had a big gash on her hand, too. She had sliced the skin somehow between her knuckles, and when she showed the nurses, they told her she was going to need stitches, too.
While we were there, Charlotte was such a brave little girl and was charming the nurses like she usually charms most people. She was being her sweet self talking about how she needed a bandaid and stickers. But then came the suturing.
The worst part about getting stitches is the lidocaine shots before they’re given. Charlotte screamed bloody murder when they were giving her the shots to numb the area, and I could have fainted at seeing the wound swell up. My poor baby! Charlotte ended up with two stitches on her three inch gash, but I think she could have probably used another one. Once she was stitched up, it took her a while to calm down, but then it was my mom’s turn to be stitched up. We were all in the same “room” when this was being done. Charlotte was also concerned about her Nana. She’s the sweetest.
Charlotte was given some Motrin, and everyone was good to go. We were given the care instructions and discharged. Some of our family had showed up, and it was nice to be greeted with smiling faces when we walked out the doors. We said our goodbyes and went on to do the things we had planned for the day. Seriously, what a morning!
We were just so grateful that out of all that glass and that heavy frame, that all she got was one gash on her leg. It could have been so much worse. So much worse. I know her angels were watching over her.
The Rest of Father’s Day
After the hospital, we went to get dressed for lunch and met up with my dad again. Charlotte was a champ, wearing her bandage proudly.
I just love these pictures. The last one was from Snapchat, but I just love how this shows that hours later, she was already back to her regular, curious self.
Once we got home from Port Lavaca/Victoria, Charlotte gave her gift to her daddy. She made this beautiful craft for him at library time last week, and she was so proud of it.
It’s already on his desk at work. I think it’s probably the best Father’s Day gift he’s gotten so far.
And that’s a wrap!
Yesterday, we were supposed to start potty training for the third time, but because of Charlotte’s stitches, I’m not going to chance the mess on her leg. No, thank you. And then next week we leave to NYC, so potty training might be done at the beginning of the week or when we get back. And then when we get back, she has dance class. Lord, help me! I guess she’ll be potty training in the middle of dance class. Whatever. It has to get done sometime soon.
I hope your Father’s Day weekend was low-key and uneventful! Talk to you soon, friend. Have a blessed one!

Oh Kristy, what a weekend! Just reading about what happened to Charlotte made me cringe, I can only imagine how awful it was for you while it was happening. When my guy was about C’s age, he fell down the stairs at our beach rental in Destin. I still see it in my mind in slow motion. Hubs thought he was with me, and I thought he was with hubs. He didn’t need stitches though. I’m so sorry that happened, but how awesome that she bounced right back to her usual happy self. xoxo

Oh, man, these kids sure can scare the living daylights out of us! It’s crazy how they need constant supervision. So thankful it was minor, but yes, it sure was scary. She’s back to normal now. She just keeps asking to go swimming and take a bath instead of a shower. She’s loving the bandaids though.

Oh, goodness!! That’s so scary about all that glass but I’m glad she was ok! Sounds like a really great weekend! Loved watching all of your snaps! :)

Yes, the glass was the scariest part! It was a great weekend up until that point. Crazy how quickly things can change, but we bounced back so quickly, and I’m really thankful for that! :) Thanks, Ashley!

oh goodness, any day that involves in ER trip isn’t my fave but it seems like it went as well as could. Nothing too serious and she was her usual self soon thereafter! I’m sure glad she’s okay.
Kristy says
Thanks, Courtney! Yeah, it was definitely a crazy way to start the day, but I’m so thankful we were able to leave there and go about our day like normal. So thankful! :) Hope you’re having a great week!
