There are times when I really feel like I’m failing at this mom business. Life with a newborn and a preschooler can be so hard sometimes. But then there are times when I really feel like I’m rocking this role. Yesterday was a mix of both. We went to Walmart for the first time as a trio, and it was a nightmare. Think baby throwing up and pre-schooler whining incessantly. The only part that was easy was finding the cereal we needed. But once we got home, things started to get easier. As tired as I was, I nursed the baby and put him down for a nap, made Charlotte and I some lunch, and then I squeezed in some quality one-on-one time with my best girl to make a special treat.
The Inspiration
We love this time of year, the time of year when we get to say, “It’s fall, y’all!” Halloween is quickly approaching, and that means it’s also time for Dia de los Muertos. Growing up Hispanic, I’ve always known about Dia de los Muertos, but I’ve never given it much thought until recently.
Thanks to Disney Jr., Elena of Avalor sparked some great questions from the little lady. In a recent episode, Elena encounters ghosts and observes Dia de los Muertos. The episode led to the inevitable, “Mama, what’s that?” I gave her an easy answer: it’s a time when we observe and pray for all of our ancestors who have gone before us. Because she was curious, I knew I wanted to make it a big deal.
Teaching her about our culture, having a little party, and spending quality time together? Yes, please! I knew this would be the perfect time to whip up a fun, fall-themed, Dia de los Muertos party mix. So that’s exactly what we did. We went to Walmart, picked out some fun Dia de los Muertos napkins, cups, and bowls, one of our favorite Big G cereals and some other snacks for the mix, and had ourselves a little celebration while the little man slept.
A Special Treat
I whipped out our supplies, and we were off to conjuring up a sweet and salty snack, all the while talking about Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos. And sneaking in some of the ingredients here and there.
Here’s what you need to make our perfect, sweet and salty kid-approved, fall-inspired, snack mix.
Fall Snack Mix
Ingredients:
Equal parts of…
- Big G Cinnamon Toast Crunch
- mini marshmallows
- caramel popcorn
- peanut butter candies
- candy corn fall mix
- mini-pretzels
(You can really add anything cinnamon-y, salty, or sweet to the mix. This combo served us well though.)
Directions:
Mix together all ingredients. Store in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container.
I mean, who wouldn’t love this?
Making snack mixes is my favorite rainy day activity and any day activity, because it’s something that Charlotte can do all on her own. She is so proud when she does something all by herself.
After she was done mixing everything together, we stored them in little treat bags. She had fun filling those, too.
This party mix is probably one of my favorites now, but that could be dangerous. I can’t stop eating it!
Celebrating holidays is so much more fun when you can see it through the eyes of your child. This year Dia Los Muertos is from Halloween, October 31, until November 2. I’m pretty sure we’ll be making this again. I think I just started a new tradition!
What’s one of your favorite holiday traditions?
