Oh, man, is this post way overdue! With just a little over a month away to Colin’s SECOND birthday, I thought I would share our super simple DIY “Where the Wild Things Are” inspired party.
I feel so bad that I’m just now sharing, because there are tons of excuses why I never shared this sooner, but I’m not even going to bore you with those. We’re here now, and that’s what it’s all about.
Colin’s first birthday went by in a blur. It was the week after Hurricane Harvey passed through Houston, so everything around us was flooded. Only a handful of our family was able to make it, but we made it the most special first birthday we could! It was also our first month in our new home, so the dust hadn’t even settled when we threw our first celebration.
My sister is the DIY queen! This is how it usually works: I tell her my vision of what I want & then she makes it. This time we worked together, because blogging has actually tremendously helped my DIY skills. ;)
Behold, A WILD ONE birthday party!
Let’s talk about some of these details. The “wild one” balloon letters are from Glamfetti Co., formerly Magnolia Bloom Boutique, and Tiffany is seriously the sweetest shop owner in all the land. She has supplied our previous three parties with all the amazing decor, and I just love it all! The big balloon and the “1” gold balloon are also from her shop. You should definitely talk to her if you’re wanting unique decor for your next party. She also does customized tassel garland, which I would have done had I planned more in advance.
The rest was kept pretty simple. You can the cutest party with minimal effort, I promise!
We did breakfast tacos and mimosas for our few guests (who all happened to be adults), and the cakes were the perfect “decor” for the table. We added a few plastic leaves for the extra punch of color, spread out some fruit, and of course propped up the little chalk board and book.
Because of the hurricane, I didn’t have time to outsource our cake(s) from a bakery, so I bought them from our local HEB. That store is just the greatest. So inexpensive and so delicious! (And no, this is NOT sponsored, just in case anyone was wondering.)
Now on to our DIYs, because they were seriously way too easy and fun to make.
the easiest DIY garland
This garland for the high chair was super simple.
All you need is four types of ribbon and burlap mesh ribbon. That’s it!
You simply take one long piece of ribbon then tie & knot cut pieces of ribbon to it until you get the desired length you want it to be. We used four types of ribbon to mix it up. You can do this for whatever theme your party is which makes it the best party DIY ever.
For the center with the 1 on it, I cut out the burlap mesh ribbon like a banner, and I hand-drew a number one on a fun piece of cardstock, cut it out, and placed it in the center. All I did was tape the number one onto the burlap. We then attached that to the middle of the ribbon with safety pins and finished off the rest of the garland with the remaining ribbon pieces. We tucked in a few leaves to give it the green pops of color for the theme.
easy no-sew DIY “Where the Wild Things Are” crown
For the crown, you only need three things:
- brown fur ribbon fabric,
- one sheet of yellow felt,
- and fabric glue.
First, I made a triangle template for the points of the crown. Then I laid the ribbon on top of the felt page to measure the width of the ribbon, as you can see in the picture above. After I had the base, I started tracing the triangle points one after another then cut out my design. Glue the felt to the back of the fur ribbon and you are done. Safety pin to close and let your little wild one be the king of the day!
For an extra element, we cut a piece of fur ribbon and pinned it to Colin’s pants. So cute!
He was the cutest wild one on his special day!
Charlotte wanted a crown, too, so I made her one in a pinch.
Then it was smash cake time!
And the rest is history! I cannot wait until his SECOND birthday, because I’m certain this year will be less stressful. Maybe I’ll even blog about it the week after it happens. ;)
