HOW THIS MOM DOES PALEO…

3. Some pluses: You can have butter, sweet potatoes, and yams, and you can bend the rules occasionally. For instance, I add soy sauce to some of my dishes, and I still lose weight. I also cook with olive oil. Although I could easily use lard.
4. Get creative. Replace peanut butter with almond butter. It can also be substituted with sunflower seed butter. Make cauliflower “rice.” Steam cauliflower, then pulse it in a food processor. Make “spaghetti” dishes with spaghetti squash.
5. Drink tons of water throughout the day.
6. Don’t overkill the exercise regimen. Stay active, but trust your gut. Literally. And get plenty of rest!
7. If it’s in a box, it’s probably not good to eat. The exception for grocery shopping (for me): broths (I buy organic) and canned vegetables.
8. Try to steer clear from alcohol, but the occasional glass (not glasses) of wine won’t hurt you. Same goes for dark chocolate.
9. Don’t count your calories. Eat when you’re hungry and eat plenty.
10. Paleo is all about trying to emulate the caveman’s diet. If a caveman would have eaten it, it’s probably a go for the diet. When you question a food, just keep this in mind.
WHAT MEALS LOOK LIKE…
chicken “tacos” without the tortillas, “beef tips stroganoff” without the noodles |
Breakfast: for me, usually looks like scrambled eggs, apples with almond butter, green tea with honey or coffee with almond milk & coconut palm sugar.
Lunch: primarily chicken thighs and a fruit. I’ll add in a vegetable if I’m feeling festive.
Dinner: always a meat and lots of veggies.
Snacks: fruits, almonds, plantain chips, coconut chips, or coconut milk yogurt (a stretch maybe, but works for me)
This week’s dinner meal plan (as seen above) consists of three of my favorite recipes:
Spaghetti squash with shrimp (I add fresh oregano & roasted cherry tomatoes)
I’ll most likely do a separate post with all of my favorite Paleo recipes soon. In the meantime, you can see some more of my favorites from my Pinterest board here.
Paleo Diet 101 is where I started when I was first learning about the Paleo lifestyle. The entire Paleo Leap site is full of great information. They also have some of my favorite Paleo recipes.

I’ve heard so many great things about eating Paleo! I definitely don’t follow it all the time, but I feel like a lot of our meals are similar to this diet. Processed foods are the worst!!

It’s tough at first, but I feel like doing it full force in the week allows me to eat what I want on the weekends. I’ve just been really bad during the week lately. I need to fit into my clothes again! :)

Yay! It is so wonderful to find another paleo gal in the blogsphere! I love paleo! Maybe we could do a collab post sometime! Get the word out about paleo!
Kristy says
It’s pretty cool and such a simple concept! Although the temptations of gooey, bread-loving meals are my weakness. I do love how it makes me feel though. :) And yes! We should definitely collaborate!

I’ve got to get back to to eating this way….I have added back way too many carbs! First it was a corn tortilla for fish tacos and the next thing you know I was eating angel hair pasta again!!! This is the one eating plan where I really felt satisfied and saw the most results without being hungry. Since turning 40 keeping the weight off my middle has been tough but this does the trick better than anything else. Thanks for sharing!
Kristy says
Me too, Shelly! I even started eating cereal again and not the good kind! I’m also a pasta person. I found that if I find the right balance, like all Paleo all week, I can cheat on the weekends. But I’ve been “cheating” almost every day so it has definitely snuck up on me.
Shelly @ the Queen in Between says
Oh cereal…..gosh how I miss cereal!! Kashi Go Lean crunch is seriously one of my cheats for sure .

We have been thinking of starting Paleo. Hubby wants to, I think we may try it out. Seems hard to stick with though; like there are a lot of things you can’t eat!!!
Kristy says
M had a way easier time with it than I did at first. He also lost way more weight than I did. I lost 10 pounds, and I think M lost about 15. We had kept it off for almost a year, but like I said, I’ve been being way too lax when it comes to what I eat these days. The drive-thrus are just too convenient! Lol. It’s easy for me to stick with it during the week, and relax a little on the weekends. We’re more an 80/20 kind of Paleo family. :)
Becky says
It’s really not that hard to follow Alycia. I’ve been following a paleo diet for awhile now. once you get use to it, you don’t even think about what you can’t have. Feel free to chat more with me about it :)

That’s awesome! You are such an inspiration! I still need to get off some of the baby weight!
Kristy says
Well thank you, Claire! I definitely am not the spokesperson for the diet, but it did help me, and I think it would definitely help others. :) I’m sure if you did a version of this, you’d lose that baby weight quickly. Good luck! Your baby is precious!

It is amazing how good “tacos” are without the shell. We usually just turn it into a salad! Great post!
Kristy says
Thank you! Oh, yeah, tacos are my favorite, but taco salads are usually what it turns into when on Paleo, and they are the best! The taco seasoning I whip is perfect, way better than a packet. :) I’m so glad I found the recipe on Pinterest. I do alter it a little, but not I think I have just the right blend.

Just saw a friend commented on this and came to take a read. Love this post. I’m a (mostly) paleo mama over here. I don’t eat this way for weight loss (although I’m hoping that’s a major perk now that I’m back on the wagon), but it’s just what my body reacts best to. The hardest part is not buying non-paleo things for toast, pasta, yogurt loving son!
Kristy says
Thanks, Becky! My husband started it to be healthier and because of allergies, but when he saw how much better he felt AND how much weight he dropped, we were fans. I was still nursing at the time so I didn’t want to join him when he started, but once I was ready, it was great for the both of us! We’ve found some great recipes. I’ll be putting them together soon. I’m sure that is hard for your son. I still give Charlotte all of the regular things, but she eats what we eat at dinner time now. :)

Good for you for getting going with Paleo! We don’t call our eating Paleo, but it’s really just like that. Eating fruits, veggies and protein. I have to have carbs every so often though. :)
Kristy says
You and me both! That’s why I indulge a little on the weekends. But I do need to be a little more strict until I lose the pounds that I gained. I have a comfortable weight where I don’t feel restricted in my clothes, and I’d like to get back there. :/ Then I can do my cheat-on-the-weekend thing. I think this was the wrong week to pick to start a diet, since I’m running the half marathon this weekend. So Monday is starting to sound like a better plan. Lol.

This is a great paleo how-to for moms! We do a modified version of paleo. My husband was very strict at first, which was much needed, and lost a lot of weight. Now we’re just maintaining.
Kristy says
Thanks, Becky! I’m all about the modified version. I need to return to my maintenance phase though, so I’m sure I’ll need to be a little more strict until I get there. ;)

Love this post. I’m 2 months postpartum and I’m lucky to be back to my prebaby weight. I want to loose another 5-10 lbs but most importantly feel healthy. Sweets are my weakness. I’m still nursing but plan to start a modified paleo soon!
