DAY 8 READING
During the month of December, a lot of us find ourselves struggling in some form or fashion. Whether it be from the internal struggle of not being enough, not doing enough, or simply not enough, we all are striving for something. Often times, we’ll throw a quick prayer up, and say, “Here it is, Lord. What do you have for me now?” Just typing that feels slimy.
In a month of giving, we often give thinking we need or will get something in return. But do you really? Is that truly “giving”? I’m not saying everyone is like this, but I know I’ve definitely fallen trap to this a time or two.
This is heavily touched on in Isaiah, chapter 58, verses 1-14 (the whole chapter). Because you need to see the whole chapter to understand what it is that it’s trying to get across, but for today’s purposes, let’s look at verses 6-10. I read three different versions of it to truly grasp it, but let’s break it down, looking at the NIV version.
and your gloom be as the noonday.
So what is this chapter saying and why do we need to hear it? Basically, don’t just go through the motions of what you THINK will please God. Those actions are empty and vain and will get you nowhere. When you fast, when you do good deeds that are pleasing to God, that is when you will TRULY see and feel his goodness, when your darkness will turn to light.
No need to boast or brag about the things you have done, because the only one it matters to is God, and He sees it all. Do what you can for all those you can help, starting with your brothers and sisters, and God will reward your ways.
In this chapter, God warns us of three things to stop doing: stop oppressing others, stop pointing the finger at others, and stop speaking wickedness. He also makes it very clear of three things that He wants us to continue doing: share your bread with the hungry, cover those without clothing, and keep ourselves available for our own flesh, for our people. Getting right with God continues by doing loving things for others.
DAY 8 CHALLENGE
What can we do to make sure we’re not just going through the motions? Let’s get out of our comfort zone and really try helping others.
Tonight, let’s start by going through our closet and giving away clothes that we do not need. Let’s donate coats, pants, and sweaters. What can you do to stretch yourself and make sure you’re truly helping others? Start small and make a big impact.
Be blessed, friends! Until next time!
