For the past six months, I have been wanting to tackle the mess that is our playroom. I’ve been searching for the best playroom organization hacks, but I never took the time to turn those hacks into reality until this weekend.
Just a little history about the space: It used to be an office/playroom, but we got rid of our office furniture to make the space a true playroom. Taking out the office furniture left the remainder of the room in shambles with nothing having a place. We have tons of things in the playroom: all shapes and sizes of toys, stuffed animals, a mini piano, a trampoline, a mini table, a kitchen set, a tent, and some bookshelves. All of these things have been in a state of disarray for quite some time, and I was over it.
Since I’m in nesting mode, there was only one thing for this mama on a mission to do. I headed to Hobby Lobby for some solutions and inspiration. I came across these Creative Option boxes, and I knew they would be perfect for all of the little toys and pieces that didn’t have a home. These boxes made me think outside of the box. Typically, they are used for crafts, but I knew toys and loose odds and ends would fit perfectly in here. They’re see-through and have enough sections to meet anyone’s organization needs.
Once I had them home, I kicked it into high gear and cleaned out the entire playroom and didn’t stop until everything had a place. Are you ready to see some transformations?
It took me several hours to get it all together, but it felt so good to get this room organized. I had to clear out all of the junk, and then come up with ways to organize everything. Here are some organization hacks I did to make it work.
Organization Hack #1
Storage Hack #1: The first thing I needed to do was to find a way to organize all of the little plastic toys. From Shopkins to Squinkies to Doc McStuffins Mobile accessories, the Creative Options boxes were the best option for these. The Medium Deep Utility Box holds the Squinkies, the little toys that look like gum ball machine prizes, and the Medium Utility Box holds the rest of the little bitty loose toys.
The boxes sit on its own shelf next to some bigger Squinkee toys, and it’s the perfect solution. Who would have thought that craft boxes could save the day?
Organization Hack #2
Storage Hack #2: Next up was finding a home for all of the Little People princesses, other princesses and friends, and puzzle pieces and magnets. These little toys are of course the ones that are played with the most, so having them constantly strewn about the room was constant chaos. They now fit nicely into two boxes, the Project Box, and they are absolutely perfect hacks to store all of the the things that you’re constantly tripping over or stepping on.
I put the boxes on a shelf I knew Charlotte could reach, and she has no problem opening them and taking out what she wants. It has also made clean up a breeze now that every little thing has a place to call home.
Organization Hack #3
The Coloring Book Hack: How many coloring books does your playroom have? Put them in an open box at your little one’s hand’s reach, and you’ll be golden. (I put two on the bottom shelf.) Place all of the crayons in a closed container, and put them on top of the coloring books. It’s a simple hack to keep them nice and tidy instead of jumbled with every other book and writing utensil.
Organization Hack #4
The Book Shelf Hack: Organize your books by season. We have a ton of books in our house, so to make the search for something a little easier, I organized each book by season and holiday. Thankfully they all fit on one shelf.
Organization Hack #5
The Flash Card Hack: One problem I was having was coming up with a way to store all of Charlotte’s flash cards. I had several people tell me to use a binder ring and punch holes through each of them, but I didn’t really have time for that. I found an old shoe box, covered it with wrapping paper, and put each set of flash cards in a plastic bag.
Charlotte can only play with one set at a time, and now they’re easier than ever to clean up and put away.
Organization Hack #6
The Gallery Art Wall: All school year long, I’ve collected Charlotte’s artwork, and when things got taken down from the fridge, they quickly turned into a mountain pile of a mess. I eventually will put all of the paintings away into either a photo album or into a filing cabinet, but for now, I wanted some of her projects to be on display. Enter the gallery art wall.
I’m hoping to add to it during the school year, so for now it looks a little simple. I also made it high enough so that my little person couldn’t pull them down. She was so excited to see all of her work on display.
Organization Hack #7
The Markers Hack: Store all of your little’s markers in a utensils holder. We’ve had this little utensil holder for ages, and it wasn’t really serving a great purpose in the pantry. We typically use it for parties, but those only happen once or twice a year. Then it dawned on me that this container would be perfect for markers. They’re the Color Wonder variety, so I don’t mind having them out in the open.
And that rounds out the few hacks that whipped this room into shape. Walking into the playroom is now a breath of fresh air instead of a sense of panic. Hopefully you found a couple of solutions to your organization woes, too.
Here are a few more detail shots of the finished room:
Playroom heaven instead of the disaster that it had become. Had it not been for the Creative Options boxes, I probably would have continued to let that room live as a disaster zone. Thankfully, I won’t have that problem any longer, and it makes me so happy. Let’s just see how long we can keep this room in tip-top shape.
What are some of your best playroom hacks?
I’m sure this room will see many more toys and changes, so I’m all ears for future projects.

Those boxes look like they work great for all those little toys! We are entering that stage of small toys… Transformers, blaze trucks, octonauts figures, it’s endless!

Meghan, they are amazing! Ever since the little toys came into our life, it’s been one big giant mess. I knew with a new baby coming, I would have to find something to contain the madness, and these boxes have been perfect. It makes clean up easy, too! Maybe they’ll work for your toys, too. :)
Hope you’re having a great week!

Love it! I need a playroom desperately. Unfortunately, our house is too small though :( I love those creative option boxes, perfect for all those small pieces that end up everywhere!

Our house is small, too, Kelly. We do have this front room that was originally designed to be a dining room, but when we moved in, we made it into an office. Once Charlotte got older, we turned it into an office/playroom, and now that’s she basically a big kids, it has fully transformed to this! I used to have a play area in our living room with the same mat as I use in here. It worked for us! You just have to make the most of your space when you have a smaller house. Makes it cozy and great for making memories!
Hope you’re having a great week, friend!

This is why I hate toys with tiny bits lol. Drive me nuts! But when everything has a place, phew so much better. It looks wonderful now! I bet you feel more zen too lol.
Kristy says
Haha, yes! Me too! But somehow the tiny toys are Charlotte’s favorite. I do feel so much better now that it is clean. We’ll be working on all the other rooms in our house this weekend while Charlotte goes on Nana-vacation. Wish me luck!

Thanks so much! It is such a difference. Makes me feel so at peace now. I’m hoping I can organize the rest of my rooms this weekend. ;)
Have a great rest of the week!

We don’t have a playroom. No space in our house. But I am ordering a 12 cube organizer for my 4yr old’s room and a 4 cube organizer for the living room, as well as some baskets for both. Everything’s a tad bit unruly right now. I love the plastic boxes for small things. I also have a 3 month old so storage for the small things is becoming more important than ever. #ShineBlogHop

I love that you didn’t shop until you cleared everything out and new what you needed! I am a professional organizer and tell my clients that all the time! Also, the cased for the itty bitty toys are perfect, great job!

Those are perfect storage for Shopkins/Pollys/Little Barbie pieces! Thanks, I never thought of that and I love organizing!

Well done Kristy! I love how organized that playroom got. Aren’t see-through containers THE best?! I don’t know what I would do without them. My biggest hack is keeping 3/4 of the toys in storage and rotating them into the room. lol
Gee that mailbag is CUTE!
Thanks for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).
Wishing you a lovely week.

Love this, Kristy! I’m currently doing a playroom overhaul so your post came just in time. Pieces for my daughter’s kitchen set drive me insane, but I’ve found that sticking them in categories (food, plates/utensils, pots and pans) and storing them in drawers or bins has worked wonders for us. Thanks for sharing!
